Software Engineer resume example

Hiring managers for engineering roles skim for three things: what you built, how big it was, and what changed because of it. This example leads every bullet with a result, names the tools in the skills section where a tracking system can find them, and keeps projects to the ones that prove something.

Bullet points for a software engineer resume

Strong bullets start with an action verb, say what you did, and end with a result someone can measure. Use these as patterns, with your own numbers.

Skills to put on a software engineer resume

How to write a software engineer resume

  1. 01

Lead with the result, then the method

"Cut response time from 900ms to 120ms by rewriting the slowest queries" tells a hiring manager more in one line than "Responsible for API performance". Put the number first so it survives a fast skim.

  2. 02

Name the tools the posting names

Tracking systems match on exact words. If the job asks for Kubernetes and you've used it, the word Kubernetes should appear in your skills and ideally in a bullet that shows what you did with it.

  3. 03

    Keep projects that prove something

A side project earns its space when it shows a skill your jobs don't, or real usage. Two strong projects beat six tutorials.

  4. 04

One page until about ten years in

Most engineers with under a decade of experience fit on one page. Cut older roles down to a line or two before shrinking the font.

  5. 05

Check what a tracking system sees

Before you apply, run your finished resume through the free ATS resume checker to see the exact text a parser pulls out, and fix anything that comes out scrambled.
